The Home Design industry has undergone a sea change. This new paradigm shift in the style of working has impacted upon the whole architecture and design practice. The need for trained architects, interior designers and related allied professionals to design and build residential homes is now a necessity rather than a luxury. For those who are interested in building homes or want to remodel their current residence into something they deem as works of art; a degree in home design is a great option. With this degree, an individual will be equipped to work as part of an architecture and design team to determine what type of home is built using the most suitable materials and techniques.

Although the Interior Design profession was once dominated by architects and other highly skilled workers, the home design industry has evolved over the past century to include a wide variety of professions. In recent years, interior designers have entered the profession with the advent of specialty schools. Specialty schools offer programs to train students in the field of decoration.

Specialty schools are becoming the norm to earn a degree in Home Design and building design. This field is evolving and becoming even more competitive with the advent of green design and high tech materials. Students pursuing a career in home design and building design may include a broad range of disciplines. In addition to the usual academic requirements such as drawing and math classes, students must also complete courses in public relations, communication, public relations and psychology. Depending on the specific field they want to work in, the subjects may include structural or building analysis, environmental, economic, social and health issues, government and planning issues, demographic analysis and public health. Some of the typical subjects included in the curriculum are architectural drawing, civil engineering, environmental assessment, housing design, landscape architecture, home buying and selling, land planning and safety. Other subjects include project management, organizational leadership, occupational therapy and project management.

Some professional organizations offer residential design certification programs. These programs help young students to acquire the skills and knowledge required for designing residential buildings. The National Association of Home Builders and the American Society of House Builders are two such professional organizations. Apart from these certifications, many young individuals will opt to take on an internship or serve as an apprentice to a licensed architect or building designers in order to gain hands-on experience and enhance their credentials.
